PT Popup

My friends at the Mercadito Hospitality Group were very sneaky and launched a new concept in the Talbot Hotel on Delaware and State in the Gold Coast.

Chef Patricio Sandoval pretty much flew in from Miami and did the menu in a matter of days, then the staff worked their butts of on the inside of the former BiCE space and voila! As of Monday they were open as “PT Popup” for friends and family.

My friend Katrina is the GM there and she invited a group of us for dinner Tuesday night to help test the food and service. Giddy-up! Kat explained that the sidewalk cafe and indoor space would be open under that concept for about 3 months then it would turn into something more permanent. The name comes from Patricio (chef) and Tippling Bros (cocktails) plus PT =’s part time.

The outdoor seating is perfect for that neighborhood, it feels casual and it’s just off the beaten path in the “triangle”.

Here is what we had:

Smoked Fish Dip: sounds weird- tastes awesome. Served in a mason jar and has the consistency of tuna salad but with a more refined flavor. Hint of Serrano chilies for Patricio’s signature kick.

fish dip

Red Snapper Ceviche: unusual combo of red snapper, potatoes, corn, citrus and spice works. Paired with plantain chips for an interesting twist.

Shrimp cocktail: standard.

Oysters: very delicious and served on a bed of salt.

Lobster Rolls: our crowd favorite of the night. These looked like mini sliders and Shaun said they tasted like Lobster bisque on a bun- in a good way. I think we went through four orders.

Lobster tacos: look like Patricio’s tacos from Mercadito, more delicate flavor than the lobster rolls, light and perfect for summer.

Chopped Chicken Salad: large portion going on over on Lexi’s plate. Looked like a lot of shredded goodness on a plate. She liked it.

Chicken: it was gone before I really saw it, but I know it was served on the bone, and the table loved it.

Steak: only thing anyone had less than stellar comments about- but it was on the cut of meat itself and not the flavors. We were told it was a vendor issue and it was getting fixed ASAP. Side note: we HATED saying anything negative, but that’s why we’re there- to be honest.

Dessert-

We shared some apple strudel type of dessert that was filled with goat cheese and served with vanilla ice cream. Amazing.

Cocktails-

TomKat: yum. It’s pink but apparently it’s so good that the boys at the table didn’t care about the fruity drink they were holding.

Ginger: tart yum- served up in a martini glass.

table shot. we don’t look like we’re having any fun, right?

I really think little facelift is exactly what the ‘hood needed. It’s ideal for a business lunch, casual dinner with friends or a first date.

Check it out before it’s gone ya’ll- it opened today.

Strike!

Most people think my idea of an ideal night is going to a fancy restaurant or the Opera or some bougis party.

They would be wrong.

One of my favorite ways to spend an evening or rainy day is: BOWLING.

My love for the lanes started back in 2003 when I worked at NFL Network and we’d go bowling as a staff all the time. I didn’t know very many people in LA at the time so the staff was like family to me, and they never made fun of my numerous gutter balls. *

I LOVE the idea of bowling as a charity event. It’s something almost everyone can do, and it really brings people together and forces conversation amongst strangers.

Tomorrow night I’m bowling in Jerry Azumah’s ASAP Foundation event- and I LOVE this night. Jerry draws a really fun crowd and we always manage to have lots of laughs and raise $$.

Me and Jerry AzumahRasheed Davis teaching me how to NOT get the ball in the gutter at last year’s event. (note to self- don’t wear that same jacket tomorrow)

If you’d like to bowl in his event there is still time- check out the link:

Next Tuesday the CelebTV staff is bowling in Dez Clark’s event. We are ready to represent and we’re really hoping Urlacher brings his new gf Jenny McCarthy!

Come roll with us… details are below:

It’s the perfect time to rub elbows with Chicago Bears and local celebs, plus you can pick up some sweet silent auction gear for Father’s Day, Birthday’s and the sports fans in your life. Not to mention- these things are a blast.

Hope to see you there…someone needs to witness my STRIKES!*

I saw this blog today on Refinery29.com and had to share it.

It’s hilarious, so spot on and just random.

This one made me LOLz out loud:

Aviary

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , on May 14, 2012 by kellizink

Friday night Shaun and I called an audible (and Nick Kokonas) and snagged a last min reso for the Aviary.

I had been a few times when it first opened, but hadn’t been in a long time so I was excited to see how the menu had evolved.

While you’re not banned from taking pics there, to me it seems tacky to whip out your i phone so I refrained from snapping any pics.

The “bites” are the most intense burst of flavor you’ll ever put in your mouth. Bold statement but really true. The guacamole bite tasted like a taco- it’s some full on Willy Wonka ish.

I also had the bowl of “chips”which is a large kitchen bowl filled with freezedried? creations. I can’t do it justice- you just have to go and order it.

My favorite cocktail “The Blueberry” had been mixed up and is now called “The Chai” and I was pumped to hear that it was infused with Rare Tea Cellar’s chai tea.

I love the room and the vibe in there, it feels like you really are escaping the city and they encourage you to sit on the same side of the table on the couches- love that.

We played the game *guess what their situation is*- do you guys ever do that? Look at the couple at the table text to you and guess if they’re on a first date, dating, friends, married, etc? Try it- it’s kinda fun.

With the whole NATO takeover about to happen, I wouldn’t be surprised if some World leaders are sipping those very same cocktails this week. But Nick and Grant would never tell- which is part of what makes that place so special.

Dating Advice

Listen- I am NO dating expert.

BUT…

6 months ago I made myself go on a date, that I didn’t want to go on.

I’m glad I went.

Ladies and Dudes- just go. You have nothing to lose and you may just end up celebrating an anniversary 6 months later.*

*yes we realize it’s cheezy to celebrate 6 months- but who cares!

Dec 4/May 10

My boss’s wife, Rebecca Besser is awesome. And I’m truly not saying that because she is married to my boss.

She’s stunning with a kick a$% figure, she’s always dressed super stylish, she’s got a huge posse of equally as sexy lady friends, she can out dance me, and she’s raised some amazing children.

She also has the same exact birthday as me- December 4th.

This year her travel schedule was insane so she decided to have her party on May 10th. None of us had any clue what was going to happen…all we knew was to arrive at her house at 6:30pm and the invite stated “You can sleep when you’re dead”.

Upon arriving Rush Zimmerman (our friend and awesome photographer) was snapping pics and male models were checking us in, taking coats and handing out light up martini necklaces.

Then we saw this in the dining room:

popcorn bar!

and every detail in their gorgeous house had been taken care of:

look up!

The party was filled with about 150 women and we were treated to a creative “salad bar” featuring chefs making to order salads and a dessert bar plus endless champagne, a performance by an Opera singer and more.

To be honest… I drank Frescas and snuck out the back semi early,  but since it IS the boss- I figured she’s appreciate my desire to give good face on camera today.

Happy Birthday Rebecca (I’m not allowed to say which birthday it was- but after 21 who really cares, right!?)

I’ve been trying out a new segment on the local Fox station here about celebs around town in Chicago.

It’s been a nice departure from national stories because I can focus on giving props to local businesses and shine the spotlight on all things Chicago.

Today Luis Gomez even linked to my info on his blog:

Chicago peeps are so nice.

We realized the link provided was incorrect so here’s where you can watch this morning’s segment if you’d like to creep:
